A light week of competition after the conclusion of the three-week CrossFit Games Open put all eyes on the Spring Beach Brawl in Pensacola, Florida. It’s at this high-level competition that we found this week’s “Friend of the Week”.

Brian Huynh is this week’s recipient for the week of March 20-27, 2024 after his performance as a member of a team on the picturesque beaches of Pensacola.

Spring Beach Brawl

Huynh was a member of the creatively named “Ryan, Brian and Sam” team with Sam True and Ryan Sansom competing in the team RX male division at Spring Beach Brawl. The team won three of the four workouts at the competition including the final two to secure the team title with six points, six points better than the runner-up team.

In the opening event, Huynh and his teammates won by nearly a minute in a three round workout that featured deadlifts, power cleans and snatches while also throwing in pull-ups and muscle-ups. They finished in 7:33 in a workout that had a 12:00 minute cap.

The second workout was the team’s worst finish of the weekend as they finished third in a tightly contested race on the beach. The team finished the five-round workout of synchro burpees over beam, alternating dumbbell hang snatches and sandbag holds in 6:09, just :15 seconds behind the winning team.

Day two of the competition start off with workout three, a max snatch, thruster, clean and jerk test, Huynh got the team started with a 285 LB snatch. That big lift helped the team put up a total of 885 LBs across all three lifts, 45 LBs more than the runner-up team.

The finale saw the team finish in a winning time of 10:41 which featured rowing, double dumbbell thrusters, dumbbell Box Step Overs, double dumbbell push press and finishing with 50 wall balls.

Get to Know Brian

Huynh’s team win at Beach Brawl continues what has been a great start of 2024 for the 30-year old from Louisiana. The three-time Semifinalist finished 38th in the worldwide Open, a career-best finish after placing 40th in the Open last year. He finished 15th in North America and seventh in North America West.

Training out of CrossFit Franco’s alongside Games veteran Brandon Luckett, he had two top-100 workout finishes including a career-best 87th in 24.3 with a time of 9:33.

Other Notable Performances

  • Nikita Yashin (Russia) – Took home the Elite Individual men’s title at the Alsancak Team Series at the Atlantique Holiday Club in Kuşadası, Turkey. He had four event win and placed in the top-5 in all eight scored events.
  • Oli Fricker (United Kingdom) – Won the HYROX PRO division in Copenhagen with a time of 57:23. That time set a new career-best for the endurance athlete out of Great Britain and it ranks 28th all-time. That time is also the eighth fastest in 2024. In the race, he had the top times in three of the eight workout stations, the sled pull, row and farmers carry.
