What it is: This is meant to be a resource document for athletes, coaches, event organizers, and fans to reference for basic information about competitions which exist in the CrossFit ecosystem.
Why we made it: The intent is to offer a layout of what competitions are available for which group(s) of athletes, when and where those competitions take place, and why you might consider competing, volunteering, or attending them.
How did these competitions get on the list: These are competitions we have reached out to and have gotten back to us with enough information for us to include them. They are for the most part competitions we have worked with in the past or will be working with soon. We are open to adding competitions to this document as appropriate.
Competitive CrossFit Athlete Tiers
We have assigned athletes to “tiers” based on their performance in recent years. The idea here is to match appropriate athletes with appropriate competitions and number of competitions. We understand that circumstances will vary athlete to athlete and year-to-year, so use this as a general guideline:
TIER | “Qualifications” | Recommended # of Comps*(outside of CF Season) | # of Comps inside of CF Season(Open, QF, Semi, Games) | TotalRecommended: |
1 | Top 30 in the world | 0-2 | 3-4 | 3-5 |
2 | 31-100 in the world | 0-3 | 3-4 | 3-6 |
3 | 101-300 in the world | 0-3 | 3 | 3-6 |
4 | 301-600 in the world | 2-4 | 2 | 2-6 |
5 | 601-1200 in the world | 2-4 | 2 | 2-6 |
6 | 1201-2500 in the world | 2-4 | 2 | 2-6 |
7 | All other Quarterfinalists | 2-4 | 2 | 2-6 |
8 | Did not make Quarterfinals | 2-4 | 1 | 2-5 |
*Recommended Number of Competitions
These recommendations are assuming that competing athletes are interested in two things:
- Getting competition experience
- Doing so without compromising the ability to continue to improve through training as well
We understand there are other reasons athletes do significantly more or less competitions than we recommend.
